Ever wanted to learn the Thai language?
Before we go any further, I have to admit the thought of learning the unfamiliar script, 44 consonants, 32 vowels, tone marks, tone rules, consonant classes plus the time factor certainly didn’t rock my boat but, think how much more you’ll get out of your vacation or your trip if you did know them turn something great into something memorable, forever.
I was in the same situation as you are.
I struggled to learn page after page of text, table upon table of rules, so difficult and so, so boring. I needed something else. I came up with the idea for Memory Aids To Your Great Adventure. MATYGA will have you learning the consonant sounds, the shapes, the classes, the vowel sounds, the tone marks, the tone rules within a few hours and definitely within a day.
You’re probably wondering how we can do this?
First of all, how does the brain work? I would like you to think of a table of text from a book you’ve recently read; or perhaps a page from a book or a magazine. Do you see text in a table, or do you see a picture of a table with text? Believe it or not, you see the picture of the object you’re trying to recall. This is how the human brain works – in pictures. Think of your last birthday, or Christmas, you remember scenes, or a sequence of them all pictures.
So, the best way to learn something has to be in a way that our brains can easily remember them – in pictures. Surely if your brain remembers in pictures, it makes it easier to learn if you put a picture in?
This is Memory Aids To Your Great Adventure - the Thai alphabet in pictures.
First of all, we use simple, cool, easy to remember pictures that encapsulates all the required information you need to learn the Thai alphabet. We have pictures for
- Consonants - their sounds, shapes and consonant classes
- Vowels – their sounds and their shapes (and where they’re written) (* see below)
- Tone marks
- Tone calculations (or tone rules)
Learning the Thai alphabet is now simple, clear, effective and fast - very fast!
No more boring page after page of text, no more remembering row after row of tables. See the alphabet shape, you straight-away think of the picture. You see the picture, you now know the sound(s), the shape and, if it’s a consonant, the class it belongs to.
Your brain remembers pictures…Memory Aids To Your Great Adventure, the Thai alphabet, in pictures.
* Following an observation from one of our reviews we must feel it only fair to warn you that we only include 28 flashcards for the 32 vowels in this version. The remaining 4 vowels, though covered in Appendix D, don't have flashcards. The main reason for this is these vowels are so rare in Thai, that if you can learn their respective long vowel equivalent sounds, then you just shorten this vowel - the sound is exactly the same, it's the duration [of the vowel] that is different. We will update the book accordingly in the next version.

I love the concept, but I have two serious issues. First, in the Kindle edition, the drawings are often out of order, with two or three drawings together, all separated from the letters they are supposed to be illustrating. This is probably just an issue with the ebook, but it is a very distracting problem. Second, I cannot download the flashcards advertised for the book at www.learnthaialphabet.com/flashcards. I've purchased the book, but there seems to be no support on the site, only a lot of advertising wanting me to spend $97 for the entire program. Why would I do that, when I can't even get support for the volume I have purchased?Product details

Memory Aids To Your Great Adventure Russ Crowley 9781908203045 Books Reviews
Wow, what a great read. I enjoy the Asian culture as I am Asian-American that has basically no Asian tradition left in him so I have to go and learn it for myself. I love that there are so many pictures in this book. In short, this book is about mastering the Thai Alphabet by covering Thai Consonants, Vowels, Tone, and Numbers.
The most important thing about this book is taking full advantage of what it has to offer. It covers everything one needs to know about the Thai Alphabet before mastering the language. The most helpful thing about this book is that has color coded pictures to easily help you in your learning. I enjoyed that this book was concisely written and can easily be consumed within one morning.
As the other reviewers have said, please buy the physical copy of this book rather than the version as the techniques taught in this book will come across much better than the version.
Thanks to Russ for another amazing, informative, well written book.
In the Thai alphabet, there are 44 consonants and 32 vowels. The author only includes 72 of the 76 with 4 missing. In the notecards that the author includes I was confused why 4 were missing from the book, but included in the notecards.
*update* The author has responded accordingly below, though I still disagree with his decision to omit these vowels.
Flash cards are easier, pictograms make it more to remember. An iPhone based flash card program would be better. Good luck!
As Thai language teacher, this can be one of my awesome teaching materials. It basically takes a letter of the Thai alphabet and creates an illustration that represents the sound of the Thai letter. But that’s not the clever part. The genius is that the illustration replicates the shape of the Thai letter. And so, when you next see that Thai letter you’ll remember it’s name through a dual association.
I recently downloaded this book to my . Whilst I like the way of teaching - the word/ picture association- I don't think it's a book suitable for kindle.
The pictures themselves are fairly difficult to see, and when the thai letter is superimposed on them it is sometimes impossibleto see where the letter ends and the picture begins as it is so small (Changing the font size doesn't help), which to me defeats the object of recognising the letters.
The author also color codes his pictures for high, middle and low class. Again, thsi is impossible to see on the kindle other than a slight change in grey tone.
If you are going to buy this, I would reccomend the book over kindle version as the techniques seem good, (in my humble opinion).
Program is very informative and helpful for the alphabet. It has plenty of explanations and uses pictures to memorize symbols. It also uses colors to display different tones. Only problem is that the formatting is a little off for digital use. Everything is still readable though.
I've studied Chinese for 30 years and I'm coming to the conclusion that Thai is at least as hard to learn as Chinese because the written forms of so many of letters are virtually identical, and so many of the spoken forms are redundant or archaic or silent or implied, etc. etc. Without even considering the question of tones, there is a very steep learning curve before you start to get the benefit of the fact that Thai is written with an alphabet rather than characters. Before I started using this book, I was tearing my hair out.
The mnemonics in this book are amazing. The pictures help you remember both the initial and final consonant pronunciation, and how to write them. The middle consonants have green backgrounds, high red and low yellow. The My Thai tutor finds them completely mystifying because she learned the alphabet with the the Go/Gai chicken; Ko/Kai egg etc system as a child in Thailand, so can't see the value of these mnemonics, but the traditional Thai system only helps to learn the most common pronunciation of letters if you already have a big spoken vocabulary to draw on.
On the other hand, I don't think this book (plus the main Learning Thai Your Great Adventure book) would work well without a Thai teacher and conventional textbook. Both of these books fill gaps in more traditional textbook like Thai for Beginners by Benjawan Poomsan Becker, but I don't think they could replace a traditional textbook.
I love the concept, but I have two serious issues. First, in the edition, the drawings are often out of order, with two or three drawings together, all separated from the letters they are supposed to be illustrating. This is probably just an issue with the ebook, but it is a very distracting problem. Second, I cannot download the flashcards advertised for the book at www.learnthaialphabet.com/flashcards.
